Appreciation of Traditional Chinese Musical Instruments (Yellow River Clay Xun)

Symposium and Exchange Meeting

Traditional Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage - Lacquer Fan Making Experience
To promote cross-cultural exchange and enhance team cohesion, Limerick International College and the Library & Archives jointly organized a trade union fellowshipeventtitled“Bridging Cultures • Sharing Knowledge”on the afternoon of April 10. The event was held at the South Campus Second Library and attracted active participation from Chinese and international faculty and staff of both departments. Together, they experienced the charm of China’s outstanding traditional culture and deepened interdepartmental collaboration and mutual understanding.
At 3:00 PM, the event kicked off with a traditional Chinese musical instrument cultural experience on the first floor. Faculty and staff had the opportunity to interact with the ancient Yellow River clayXun(a Chinese ocarina), listening to its melodious tones and even trying to play it themselves, immersing in the unique charm of Chinese musical heritage. The brief 20-minute session gave participants a vivid appreciation of intangible cultural heritage preservation.
Afterward, guided by staff, the attendees toured the library’s reading rooms, periodicals section, and foreign-language original book lending area. Through detailed explanations, they gained a deeper understanding of the library’s literature resource distribution and service functions, particularly its rich collection of foreign-language books, which provide strong support for cross-cultural teaching and research.
The two departments then held a discussion session chaired by Shi Junfeng, Secretary of the Library & Archives Party Committee. He facilitated conversations on topics such as cultural integration and resource sharing, where faculty exchanged work experiences and collaborative aspirations. The event then reached its highlight—a hands-on experience of traditional Chinese lacquer fan making. Participants crafted exquisite lacquer fans with creative designs, further appreciating the ingenuity of intangible cultural heritage techniques amid laughter and joy.
Zhang Changsen, Party Secretary and Dean of Limerick International College, remarked:“This trade union activity, centered on cultural exchange and knowledge sharing, strengthened mutual understanding among Chinese and international faculty while breaking down departmental barriers and reinforcing teamwork through diverse interactive experiences.”
Participants expressed that such events not only enriched their leisure time but also built bridges for cross-departmental cooperation. Moving forward, Limerick International College and the Library & Archives will continue to deepen collaboration, organizing more activities that blend cultural depth with team-building features, injecting new vitality into campus cultural development.
